Chp 4 question: # 5 "Symbolism"

We all know symbols have a deeper and relative meaning to their purpose, so what symbols have you noted or felt would come "in to play" soon in this novel. Colors, objects, animals, settings, and so on.. (Hint, you may want to research characteristics or habits of these and you will be amazed at how much is hidden in this novel.) Discuss these with each other.

  1. Symbols in the book I’ve noticed are the mice and the rabbit. The mice are a symbol of Lennie and the traits they have in common. For example mice cause trouble and damage just like Lennie causes trouble for George and himself even if he doesn’t mean to do so on purpose. Another good example is mice go by their senses just like Lennie tends to do the same when he went to touch the young girls red dress without thinking twice about it. Now the rabbits are also an important symbol it symbolizes rebirth something Lennie is trying to find and doesn’t even know it. Both symbols are very important the more I read the more the symbols help me understand better the reading.

  2. Another symbol i noticed in the story was the color red. According to the book, Lennie loves the color red. Lennie can be color Blind and can only see the color red, or it can be the color of blood "his own blood from fighting Curly". Red can pretty symbolize anything in the book.

  3. I feel like the symbol in the book is the person Lennie himself, he is like the dog that comes back even though when the master beats them up. He is that one person that can see red and like things that are red. There are many symbols in this book, but Lennie is always somewhere in the symbols.

  4. The symbol i have noticed in this story would be the color red. The color red is what a dog can see since dogs are color blind. Lennie in the story is like a dog and george is the owner. The color red in the story means danger; red lipstick, red shoes, red dress. It all means that danger is approaching.

  5. If you look closely, there is a rabbit hidden in the bushes. The rabbit is a big symbol in the novel. Rabbits are calm and not aware of their surroundings. Lennie is like a rabbit. He’s a very gentle giant. Lennie is also not aware of his surroundings either.

Lennie and George travel from county to county. They have no friends; no family. Lennie and George have a dream, however. They’re dream is to buy and live on their very own land. Rabbits are, also, a symbol of rebirth. If the two men get that land, it’ll be a fresh start for them; a rebirth.

  6. The symbol of the dog. Lennie he is a PET and basically nothing more everyday he wakes up and waits for George to tell him what to do. But dogs understand even better then Lennie dose. Lennie has no idea how to learn new tricks. Even though George could live easy without Lennie, Lennie will fallow him and keep him safe. Even someone talking about George getting hurt makes Lennie mad. Lennie is a PET. ... "i should have been the one to do it,... I should have been the one to kill that dog."

  7. @Amanda N. I completely agree with your post. Your analogy comparing Lennie to a dog and George as the owner really stood out to me. Also, you gave good examples to prove the color red stands for danger.

  8. I've noticed a few symbols in this novel that are probably going to come into play. Such as, the color red. Whenever the color red shows up in the book, it seems to mean danger. Like the girls red dress, that Lennie touched and didn't want to let go. Or Curley's wife's red dress, nails, shoes and lipstick. He would have gotten in trouble, if he and George didn't run away from the town of weed. Another symbol that I have noticed that's in this novel is the rabbits. Lennie likes to pet the rabbits and can not wait to live on the ranch with George. In the novel, George promises Lennie that he's going to build a rabbit hutch for his many rabbits that he wants.

  9. Okay. Great information here so far. But I don't want you all to feel that you need to start commending each other now, rather, start asking questions! Or challenge someone to prove it.. If you are really reading what those above this post are stating, you have to have some questions that come to mind..

  10. Oh, and try to come up with some symbols that we did not discuss in class. What about characters and what they represent (nice job DWolf, bringing up Lennie), or the setting by the deep green pool" and how its changes are symbolic.. What does this dreamed of ranch symbolize.. IMPRESS ME>>.
