American Cruelty

Steinbeck expresses his opinion of the obvious issue of "cruelty toward(s) newcomers" (paragraph 4-5) in his essay which was written in the 1940s.

Does this issue still exist? Are humans still out for themselves and intimidating the newcomers in order to defend unity? Give an example of this that you may be witnessing in you life or in our country.
